Old Bolt Holes Try on Some New Threads

Automotive molder ITW Deltar Fasteners found new life for the battered bolt holes on its machine platens with a solution that’s designed to last.

Kenny Dearing (right), ITW Deltar Fasteners process engineer, has utilized C-Serts to replace worn bolt holes on platens throughout the company's molding facility.

I just wanted to let you know I received the C-Sert setup and tried it out last weekend. It made the job so easy; I knocked out 6 stripped platen holes in no time at all!

I like how manageable the mag drill is, as compared to the 100+lb old mag drill we already had…and the Milwaukee drill is a beast! (Yes, I inserted the C-Pin, it’s just behind the bolt in the photo lol) As the rest of my injection units come available for some downtime, I’ll have them all repaired and will need to order some more 16mm C-Serts soon.

Just wanted to give you a quick review on the C-Serts. We have been using this product for several years now with great results. The C-Serts are easy to install and hold up better than any other inserts we have used. We use these in injection molding machines to repair stripped out platen holes for mounting our molds. We have had no issues with these since we started using them. Great product that we plan on using for years to come!

Thanks for providing a great product,

Over the many years (45 and counting) that I have been involved in the injection molding business, I have seen many ways that the holes in a platen of an injection molding machine can become striped out. Over those many years I have used many methods and products to try to repair these holes in a long lasting way, that was also, not too time consuming to install. Most failed to last. By far the best method that I have encountered are C-Serts, made by the C-Sert manufacturing Company in Portland Oregon. Not only are C-Serts fairly easy to install, they address the main issue of how these holes managed to get striped in the first place, damaged bolts. The C-Serts act as a “mini-die to dress up damaged bolts” that manage to get by the eyes of the person installing them. The few minor issues that have arisen with our use of C-Serts here at our facility, were quickly addressed and resolved by the C-Sert team out of Portland Oregon. A big “THUMBS UP” to Carl Storm and the folks at C-Sert! I highly recommend their product line for both ease of use, and their longevity in creating a lasting repair!

We are an injection molding company with presses ranging from 250 ton to 18,500 ton with molds that exceed 28,000 lbs. The molds are clamped into the press via mold clamps with bolts that ate 1”-8 and ¾”-10. Press and mold weight dictate how many clamps will be used to support mold. The personal who change the mold tend to over tighten the clamp bolts in fear of the mold slipping and od dropping from the press platen. As you can guess the threaded holes in the platens become stripped from bolts being over tightened or bolts which have been stretched from over tightening and forced into threaded holes. In the past we have used a popular thread repair method which would temporarily fix the threaded hole but would not last. I was introduced to C-serts around 2017 and have used them since. We have had almost zero failures and the ones we have had have been a result of improper installation. I have no plans on replacing C-serts with a different manufactures thread repair system.
